Myanmar
Myanmar is located in the northwest corner of South
East Asia between India and China. It is one of the
least visited countries in the world. There are over
130 ethnic groups living in Myanmar. The majority of
these are Buddhists who continue to preserve their unique
culture and tradition although racially speaking they
are descendants of the Mongoloid stock and have been
culturally influenced by India since the arrival of
Buddhism during the 3rd century BC.
An ex British colony,
Myanmar is a fascinating country of many contrasts.
The capital Yangon (Rangoon), in the south is the main
gateway for travellers who come to see the sights of
Bagan (Pagan), Inle Lake and Golden Rock and Mandalay.
The world famous Shwedagon Pagoda can be found in Yangon.
The country features snow
capped mountains in the north from which the main rivers
Irrawady and Chindwin flow onto the arid central plain
and then into the turquoise sea of Andaman in the south.
The climatic conditions vary from the temperate mountainous
areas of the north to the equatorial peninsular of the
southern seas.
