  Thailand
A delightful touring holiday of Thailand starts with a couple of days in Bangkok with a half-day tour to the Grand Palace, and maybe a tour to Ayutthaya. Then a fascinating daylight train journey to Chiang Mai in sprinter similar to those modern rail cars that operate out of Melbourne to country Victoria. You will visit the fascinating cottage industries where umbrellas are hand painted, porcelain, wood carving etc.Visits can be made to the Meo Hill tribe s or if you want something morew authentic a 4WD visit tio a remote Black Lisu village. A highlight of your tour will be a couple of days in incredibly lovely Mae Hong Son, noted for its Burmese style wooden architecture, flowers and Buddhist Monks seeking offerings in the colourful marketplace. A wonderful elephant ride with a visit to the long necked women followed by an exhilarating ride on down the Pai River. Chiang Rai and the Golden Triangle are popular with many people. Thailand is blessed with lovely beaches so a stay in Phuket, Hua Hin, Koh Samui etc are often included.

People wanting to visit history include the River Kwai while others include Phistanuke and Lampang. These latter two are incorporated on scheduled coach tours that incorporate Chiang Mai and Northern Thailand. Isan (North East Thailand) and Songhkla are less visited as due to a lack of English spoken is best taken as a guided tour.

For those who want to experience rural Thailand the delightful Mae Sa Valley in the mountains out of Chiang Mai is a must. Here in comfortable standard grade huts one can experience beautiful gardens, home grown produce, nearby villages and invigorating air. Then there are hill tribe treks for the energetic; but beware from December to February the temperate can fall to minus 5

Bangkok to Malaysia and Singapore by Train
We have been crafting individual and group rail holidays for at least 20 years. Our experience is that the most economic route is to start in Bangkok and head south. The trains are comfortable and air conditioned. Thai Railways journeys to Malaysia have first class airconditioned sleepers complete with wash basin for the overnight trip as far as Hadyai in southern Thailand. A restaurant serves tasty Thai cuisine while alcohol may be purchased. From there for the 4 hour journey across the border to Butterworth (Penang) there are only comfortable air-conditioned second class seats provided.

The seats in first class on the Malaysian trains are extremely roomy and recline just like aircraft business class seats. No alcohol is allowed on Malaysian trains. Clear announcements in English are made approxiamately 5 minutes before arrival at each station. There is a snack car selling inexpensive but basic food.

Our custom made rail trips can be tailored to your needs. Most people have a few days in Bangkok while some start their rail journey after a beach vacation at Hua Hin which is on the line south.

Myanmar
Myanmar is located in the northwest corner of South East Asia between India and China. It is one of the least visited countries in the world. There are over 130 ethnic groups living in Myanmar. The majority of these are Buddhists who continue to preserve their unique culture and tradition although racially speaking they are descendants of the Mongoloid stock and have been culturally influenced by India since the arrival of Buddhism during the 3rd century BC.

An ex British colony, Myanmar is a fascinating country of many contrasts. The capital Yangon (Rangoon), in the south is the main gateway for travellers who come to see the sights of Bagan (Pagan), Inle Lake and Golden Rock and Mandalay. The world famous Shwedagon Pagoda can be found in Yangon.

The country features snow capped mountains in the north from which the main rivers Irrawady and Chindwin flow onto the arid central plain and then into the turquoise sea of Andaman in the south. The climatic conditions vary from the temperate mountainous areas of the north to the equatorial peninsular of the southern seas.
