AnAn Bear Sanctuary

Travel by jet boat to Anan Bear Sanctuary, which is located 35 miles southeast from the town of Wrangell. After arriving at Anan Island you will be guided on an informative 15 minute walk, learning about local and native history on your way to the observation decks. The walk is relatively flat and is led by an experienced local guide.

The observation platforms are in an excellent location to safely observe and photograph both Black and Brown bears in the wild while they feed on salmon. All of the usual bear visitors have names and their own personality, the Park Rangers can help you identify them.

From the main platform you can go down to the lower deck in small groups for a closer view of the bears catching fish. AnAn Creek has the biggest pink salmon run in southeast Alaska so the lower deck is also a good spot to see them and appreciate how hard the salmon work to swim upstream. When you lift your eyes from the river and look to the trees you will find Bald Eagles.

This tour is available from early July through until the end of the August when the salmon run finishes for the year.
