This historic route, built during the height of the Klondike Gold Rush, is known as the ‘Scenic Railway of the World’. With a lot of determination, 450 tonnes of explosives and the work of tens of thousands of men the railway was built. Out of the one hundred thousand people that headed to the Klondike gold fields only thirty to forty thousand made it all the way. A few hundred of those who found gold actually became rich.
Your rail excursion starts in the Port of Skagway where you board the train and travel up to 2,865 feet. Once welcomed aboard, the staff enjoy sharing stories of the epic journey many made in the search to strike it rich. You will ride in comfortable restored and replica rail coaches pulled by vintage diesel locomotives. The train passes cascading waterfalls, historic sites and spectacular scenery. The White Pass and Yukon Route is renowned for not only its natural spectacles, but also its manmade constructions including towering bridges, cliff hanging road beds and tunnels bored through solid rock.
While the conductor lets you know what attractions are coming up you can step out to the front or back of your carriage to get a good photo as the train goes around the corners. Keep your ears open to the sounds of the train as the wheels click on the railway. This is a must do for rail enthusiasts.
