South America Group Tour

Back to List

Planning for our proposed 2012 South America Group Tour is almost complete. We are putting the finishing touches on the tour brochure and should be in a position to distribute copies in early December.

There is an almost endless list of interesting and scenic areas within South America. Consequently, we have designed the tour to provide maximum flexibility and choice. The base itinerary includes a 30 day tour of Chile, Argentina and Lima. In addition to visiting major cities such as Santiago, Buenos Aires and Santiago, we will also visit ‘unusual’ places that allow you to experience traditional lifestyles.

We will incorporate a variety of rail, coach and ferry travel into the itinerary. Where possible we are avoiding the usual practice of flying from place to place within South America. We've chosen to minimise flying, as over the years we have found people enjoy travelling overland rather than flying between towns. This gives you an opportunity to enjoy more of the scenery and local countryside.

Highlights of the tour include:

  • Three nights in Santiago including city tour and attendance at colourful local rodeo
  • Visit to a famous Hacienda for a wine tasting.
  • Dinner cruise on a multi masted schooner on the Patagonian fjords
  • A day on Patagonian islands with the brightly coloured stilted houses set against a volcanic Andean backdrop
  • Two day Lakes Crossing of the Andes by catamaran and bus

  • Tour of Bariloche with its idealic lake setting.
  • Panoramic tour of alpine country dotted with glaciers, high country fields and lakes.
  • Overnight rail journey on the recently introduced ‘Patagonian Express’. The train has an ‘old west’ atmosphere where you meet the locals whilst dining on steaks washed down with a glass of red. Traditional ballad songs and music is a feature of this train.
  • Exploring the world famous pampas cattle country
  • Touring the picturesque cobble-stoned colonial village of San Antonio de Areco,b the acknowledged Gaucho capital. We will spend the night on a working ranch.
  • Two night stay in Buenos Aries including half day sightseeing tour.
  • Two night stay at Iguazu Falls.

In Peru, we are giving participants the choice of three alternatives:

  • Cusco, Machu Pichu and Lake Titicaca
  • Amazon and ancient civilizations in Northern Peru
  • Inca Trail, Machu Pichu and Lake Titicaca

In the meantime, please feel free to contact Hugh McMaster should you have any questions.
